Do you know that your brain is holistic, parallel, and analog, with self-organizing tendencies? Those from the berlin school think so, and so do I. Besides, it’s fun to say- try it: “gestalt.”
The law of prägnanz (German for pithiness) says that we tend to order our experience in a manner that is regular, orderly, symmetric, and simple.
You may be familiar with this famous statement that is often associated with Gestalt psychology: “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”
It's from thinking about how we experience design that principles get formulated. Designers that want to utilize an understanding of principles use a process. The process helps with the following:
- Identify the principles that apply and why.
- Evaluate probable (or possible) outcomes of different design choices.
- Understand what new applicable principles come in to play as a result.
Did you catch that? The word "process?" You may have heard the phrase "design is a process," or "process of design."
Good design comes from (among other things) good process. And I don’t mind if you quote me on that.
